Pheniramine maleate
Composition
Each tablet contains 25 mg Pheniramine Maleate.
Properties
Avil is suitable for the treatment of hypersensitivity reactions and pruritus of varying origin. It reduces secretion in catarrhal disorders and weeping eczema.
Indications
Allergic conditions (hypersensitivity reactions) such as:
- hay fever (pollinosis) with attacks of sneezing, itching and running of the nose, inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye.
- urticaria and eczema (including neurodermatitis) with pruritus, and reddening and swelling of the skin.
Contraindication and precautions
Avil must not be used in patients who are hypersensitive to pheniramine.
Internal use: Avil must not be taken by patients with prostatic hypertrophy and a tendency towards residual urine formation and, as a precaution, should not be taken during pregnancy.
Side effects
After internal use the following symptoms have occasionally been experienced dryness of the mouth, urine retention, increase in intraocular pressure, gastrointestinal upset, palpitations and, after high doses, hallucinations, agitation and disorientation.
Drug interactions
The effect of drugs which act on the central nervous system (e.g tranquilizers, neuroleptic agents and MAO inhibitors) and of alcohol may be potentiated.
Dosage and administration
Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the following dosage is recommended:
In adults and young people of over 12 years of age it is advisable to begin treatment with ½, tablet, 2 - 3 times daily after meals.
If necessary, the daily dose may be increased to 1 tablet 3 times daily from the second day of treatment onwards.
Special notes
In patients with narrow angle glaucoma, treatment with Avil must be carried out under opthalmological supervision.
Even at the dosages prescribed, these preparations may affect the patient's alertness to such an extent that the ability to drive or operate machinery is impaired. Con-sequently, patients engaged in these activities should reduce their daytime dosage and take a full dose at bedtime.
Blood dyscrasias that very occasionally occur with antihistaminics have so far not been observed with pheniramine.
Storage
Store at Room Temperature (25°-30°C).
