Pharmacology
Fucicort® combines topical antibacterial action of fusidic acid with the anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects of betamethasone. Betamethasone valerate is a topical steroid with rapid effect in inflammatory dermatoses. Even refractory conditions can often be treated successfully.
When applied topically, fusidic acid is effective against Staphylococci, Streptococci, Corynebacteria, Neisseria and certain Clostridia and Bacteroides. The anti bacterial activity of fusidic acid is not diminished in the presence of betamethasone.

Indications
Fucicort® is indicated in inflammatory dermatoses where bacterial infection is present or likely to occur. Inflammatory dermatoses include atopic eczema, discoid eczema, stasis eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, lichen simples chronicus, psoriasis, discoid lupus erythematosus.
Dosage
Uncovered lesions: 2-3 daily applications.
Covered lesions: Less frequent application may be adequate.
Warning And Precautions
Long-term continuous therapy should be avoided, particularly in the face, on flexures, and intertrigenous areas, and in infants and children. Adrenal suppression can occur even without occlusion. Atrophic changes may occur on the face and to a lesser degree on the other parts of the body, after prolonged treatment with potent topical steroids. Topical steroids should not be used extensively in pregnancy - fetal abnormalities have been seen in animals due to systemic absorption. Caution should be exercised if a topical steroid is used near the eye. Glaucoma might be the result if the preparation enters the eye. Systemic chemotherapy is required if bacterial infection persists. The use of combination for more than 7 days will not give better benefit compare with the single formula.
Side Effects
Hypersensitivity has rarely been encountered. As with other topical corticosteroids, prolonged and intensive treatment may cause local atrophic changes of the skin, such as striae, thinning and dilatation of the superficial blood vessels, particularly when occlusive dressing is used or when skin folds are involved. Systemic absorption, sufficient to produce hypercorticism/ adrenal suppression, can occur with prolonged or extensive use. Infants and children are at particular risk, more so if occlusive dressing are used. A napkin may act as an occlusive dressing in infant.
Contra-Indications
Topical corticosteroids are contra-indicated in tuberculous, viral and fungalor bacterial original skin infections, perioral dermatitis, acne rosacea and ulcerative condition.
Hypersensitivity to any component.
